This carving is based on a traditional Maori saying: "Tangaroa pukanohi nui. The ocean spirit has large eyes, and he watches over us." In essence, this design represents spiritual protection, especially for someone who has a water connection. One side of the carving shows a manaia or guardian form which overlooks the ocean waves, on the other side. It reflects guardianship for those who resonate with the waterways that surround us.
