Ocean Guardian

This carving is based on a traditional Maori saying: "Tangaroa pukanohi nui. The ocean spirit has large eyes, and he watches over us." In essence, this design represents spiritual protection, especially for someone who has a water connection. The top part of the carving shows a stylized bird head and eye looking down on the ocean (the bottom part of the carving), where the waves are roiling.

This carving is made from especially rare "fossil" walrus ivory in that there are blue-grey tones, as well as brown and cream colors. I estimate this material to be close to 4,000 years old. In addition, this carving can be worn with either side facing out. Each side is unique and displays a different color palette.
