The fishhook is one of the most prevalent symbols used in Maori carving. It is a talisman for strength and prosperity; and is also a good symbol for anyone with an affinity for water. The fishhook is often given as a mark of friendship and respect. It is also traditional to give this carving to someone who is embarking on a journey. I have incorporated a stylized manaia form into this carving. The manaia represents spiritual protection or guardianship.
