Hei Matau

This design is my contemporary version of the fishhook. The fishhook is one of the most prevalent symbols used in Maori carving. It is a talisman for strength and prosperity; and is also a good symbol for anyone with an affinity for water. The fishhook is often given as a mark of friendship and respect. It is also traditional to give this carving to someone who is embarking on a journey.

Like many of my designs, this fishhook is carved in the round and can be worn with either side facing out. One side displays the deep brown of the outer dentin of the walrus tusk, while the other showcases the light, mottled inner dentin.
