This design is part of a series of pieces that are moving into the area of bigger, more sculptural work. The carving is a combination of both Matau and Manaia forms reflecting spiritual guardianship, protection and strength. It is a more contemporary take on the design and I wanted to create a form that seemed to bend and flow with the curve of the material. The upper part of the design also incorporates two koru forms reflecting connection and relationship. The grooved pattern running down the curve of the lower part of the design reflects the sweeping curve of swell lines. The base material is a piece of Swamp Kauri collected from the coromandel peninsula. The wood is collected from swamps and bogs and it is over 40,000 years old.
