This ocean design represents connection to water. The Maori believe that water is the carrier of spirits; and the ocean is regarded as a place with with great mana (spirit or strength). I carved this piece after visiting tide pools along the Strait of Juan de Fuca which separates Washington State from Vancouver Island. I was particularly inspired by the diversity of sea life, as well as the gently undulating seagrass.
