The fishhook is one of the most prevalent symbols used in Maori carving. It is a talisman for strength, determination, and prosperity. It is also a good symbol for anyone who has an affinity with water. Fishhooks are often given as a sign of friendship and respect, or when someone is embarking on a journey. This design also incorporates two korus (ferns) in the negative space of the carving. The korus add the element of spiritual growth, as well as relationship and connection. This design is my interpretation of a traditional form with a more modern flow.
