This design combines two traditional elements. The Manaia, or bird form, is generally regarded as a spiritual guardian and represents the flight of the soul through life. The negative space of the carving is a Koru (fern) form, which adds the element of spiritual growth and peace. Because the of guardianship and growth elements, this design is ideal as a gift from parent to child; or as a symbol for anyone looking for protection as they grow through an experience in their life.
This carving is a deep shade of reddish orange and is made almost entirely of the inner dentine of the walrus tusk. This is a relatively rare piece of material and I estimate it to be around 3,000 years old.
