The fishhook is one of the most prevalent symbols used in Maori carving. It is a talisman for strength and prosperity; and is also a good symbol for anyone with an affinity for water. The fishhook is often given as a mark of friendship and respect. It is also traditional to give this carving to someone who is embarking on a journey. This carving incorporates the added element of the Manaia (a stylized bird), with the eye and beak situated at the bottom of the carving looking up toward to the sky. The Manaia is regarded as a spiritual guardian and represents the flight of the soul through life and beyond.
