Papatuanuku

Papatuanuku is the Maori name for mother earth. In this design, mother earth is represented by the intertwined roots of a tree. At the top and running down the right side, is a Manaia (bird) form which represents guardianship and spirituality. The Manaia also has a stylized hand which is reaching down to the roots of the earth. The overall shape of this carving represents a spiritual guardian reaching down from the heavens to draw strength from the earth.
