This contemporary design is inspired by the "Kawau" or Black shag. This bird is seen as a representation of determination and purpose. This has been born out by an recent encounter in the surf, a kawau  surfaced next to me with a HUGE fish that it had caught.  Over the next 5 minutes I watched as it struggled to deal with it's writhing prize, and I was amazed when it finally swallowed the fish.

This carving is made from “fossil” walrus ivory which is around 3,000 years old. This carving can be worn with either side facing out. The color is an amazing mix of swirling brown and orange. The inner dentine is particularly colorful.
