Hei Matau with Korus

The fishhook is one of the most prevalent symbols used in Maori carving. It is a talisman for strength, determination, and prosperity. It is also a good symbol for anyone who has an affinity with water. Fishhooks are often given as a sign of friendship and respect, or when someone is embarking on a journey. This design also incorporates two korus (ferns) in the negative space of the carving. The korus add the element of spiritual growth, as well as relationship and connection.

Like many of my designs, this fishhook is carved in the round and can be worn with either side facing out. One side displays the smooth outer dentin of the ivory while the other reveals the inner, mottled dentin.
